When I've Had Just Enough...I Adjust

I can’t help but to think of how interesting it is that when you are planning to do great things you sometimes find yourself doing the exact opposite.  You know those days when you wake up feeling great and one of your children decides that today is the day they want to write on your car or make hand prints on your freshly washed truck.  (Yes, that happened and I have the pictures to prove it.)  Those are the days that you just know you will be on the news with that ugly mug shot of your face and hair looking like you just got electrocuted. 


Today, I wanted to share just a few quick thoughts on how to adjust yourself when your actions and thoughts go astray.  When that happens without a positive adjustment, it is most certain that the result will not be positive.  When a conversation arises and you can feel yourself getting hot in the collar, try these steps first.


Stop and think.  A lot of times I am so upset that I will just fly off the handle.  Well, that is not always beneficial.  Okay.  It’s never beneficial.  I usually end up going back to apologize.  When I stop and take the time to think about why I am so angry, it brings me back to the reality that getting all puffed up is not worth it. 


Let the other person talk.  After I have thought it over, I allow the person to finish their thought.  The truth is that person may be having the same bad day that you are having.  Hear their heart.  If you sense that there is no way to diffuse their anger or hurtful speech, it is time to end the conversation and move on. 


Apologize.  Don’t be afraid or ashamed to apologize for how you may have acted or even how that person is feeling.  A kind word turns away wrath.


So, that seems simple for conversations but what about our actions?  Most of the steps are the same.  It takes us to stop, be slow to speak, quick to hear, and slow to be angry.  Even when you have been done wrong, you have to look at things from both sides.  It is definitely not an easy way to ride the roller coaster of life but it works.  Trust me it works.


Many times I have laid in my bed and thought I could’ve just punched their lights out.  Then I think of the look in their eyes and the pain in their speech and, even in my bed, I am glad that I did the right thing.  In this day and age, it is easy to be angry.  Too easy I’d say.  Yet, a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.  They stand out and cause people to think.  Start a revolution of adjustment.  We have to be the forerunners in order to see change.
